Manchester United boss Marc Skinner has made an exciting prediction about Anna Sandberg, tipping the defender to become one of the best players in the world in her position. Skinner made this prediction after Sandberg’s superb performance in United’s 2-1 WSL win over West Ham on Sunday. United beat West Ham United returned to winning ways as they beat second-bottom West Ham at Leigh Sports Village, thanks to goals from Elisabeth Terland and Dominique Janssen. Skinner’s side had lost their last two WSL games heading into the contest with West Ham and they desperately needed to register a win to get their season back on track. United started the game in fine fashion, dominating possession and creating chances. However, they were frustrated by a resolute Kinga Szemik between the sticks for West Ham. The hosts kept their foot on the gas and finally shed first blood when Sandberg brilliantly teed up Terland with a sublime cross that was just begging to be finished. The strike marked Terland’s 10th of the season. But West Ham hit United back moments after the restart as Shekiera Martinez caught out returning goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce with an overhead ball that looped into the top corner. United had the last laugh when Janssen stepped up to fire a 20-yard free-kick into the corner, well past the reach of Szemik. After the final whistle, Skinner spoke to the media and singled out two players for praise – Sandberg and Maya Le Tissier. He was especially complimentary of Sandberg, who won the Barclays Player of the Match trophy. Skinner praises Sandberg and Le Tissier Skinner said about Sandberg[as quoted by United media], “She’s playing a really good forward in [Shekiera] Martinez and I felt that she got tight too tight to her once, and then she learned from that straightaway… and just her maturity.” “The ability to play quickly the way that she does, honestly, I think she’s going to be one of the very best in the world. We’re happy the recruitment and that we made a decision early on Anna.” “We waited a year where she was frustrated because she wants to play, but now we’re starting to see the real Anna.” The United head coach added, “I think she’s an incredible footballer, but more importantly, a really strong human, with the tragedy of the mother [passing away] in the summer. For her to come the way that she has is testament to her and her family.” On Maya, Skinner hailed the team captain’s reliability, branding it almost non-human. “She’s just an incredible human… she’s actually probably not human. She’s probably bionic, but she’s fantastic, great character.” “Maya never gives you any sign or indication of being tired, so you play her and today I thought she was back to one of her very best [performances].” “he’s mixing her style up. I think you saw for England as well, she’s got the quality to start at centre-half, which is nice to see, and long may that continue. “I’m really happy with Maya and she’s my right arm at this club, isn’t she? That’s why I made her the captain.” “She’s a fantastic human and someone I’m very, very fond of.” United have now moved up to third place in the WSL rankings, one point below Chelsea in second and seven adrift of table leaders Manchester City.
