Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo has dominated the back pages all season. Breakthrough Mainoo rose through the ranks very quickly at Old Trafford. He was part of the 2022 FA Youth Cup victory. A year later, he made his senior full debut for the side and would go on to play an integral part in United’s FA Cup victory in 2024. Nonetheless, his influence has declined massively over the last two seasons, first through injury and then managerial selection. Ruben Amoirm The England midfielder has rarely been given much of a look-in by Amorim, who has spent just over one year at the club. This season, he has made only one start, in the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town. He has made nine substitute appearances this season in the Premier League, playing a small total of 171 minutes. Mainoo is reportedly hurt by the lack of minutes he is receiving and is desperate for a loan move away in January for the sake of his career. Amorim has defended leaving the Englishman out over and over again, claiming he just tries to pick the team he thinks will win in the pre-match press conference before the Wolverhampton Wanderers game on Monday. His reaction to a question about not subbing on Mainoo after Thursday’s draw with West Ham United also raised eyebrows, as he laughed at the question, confusing and angering some supporters. In high demand Even if Amorim is not that interested, numerous top clubs around Europe are keen on the 20-year-old. The Daily Mail report that “the Serie A champions (SSC Napoli) are still keen to sign Mainoo until the end of the season, and are one of a dozen clubs from England, Italy, Spain and Germany expressing an interest in taking him on loan.” The paper adds that, “Mainoo’s hopes of leaving could hinge on United signing a midfielder in January, having blocked his exit in the summer when deals for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Conor Gallagher, of Atletico Madrid, failed to materialise.” There have been numerous recent reports of Napoli continuing to have serious interest in the midfielder, and Chelsea have also been heavily linked to the midfielder in the past.
