Fabrizio Romano Says Man United Are More Likely To Sign PL Midfielder Over Conor Gallagher In January

BACK Dylan Oakley Nov 28th 2025 Man United are hoping to sign a midfielder in the January transfer window, with Conor Gallagher among the players linked.  Gallagher used to play for Crystal Palace, which is who Man United plays this weekend. The Red Devils hope to get back to winning ways after they lost 1-0 to Everton in their last match on Monday night. Man United are reportedly very keen on signing a centre-midfielder in January, as Ruben Amorim has a distinct lack of options behind the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. Gallagher is one name who has been mentioned, but the Atletico Madrid star is only wanted by United for a potential loan move. Gallagher has made 18 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga side this season, scoring two goals. He hasn’t been in the starting XI as much as he would like, hence the rumours suggesting a move back to the Premier League. Football transfer Journalist Fabrizio Romano said that Atletico don’t want to let him leave on loan, so it could be unlikely that United sign him in January. Romano said on his YouTube channel: “Man United tried in the final hours of the summer window to get Conor Gallagher on loan; that was not possible, as Atletico Madrid always said a permanent transfer or nothing. “Atletico Madrid remain in that position, they want around 30-35 million euros for Conor Gallagher; At the moment, they are not opening the door to a loan move.” Romano says Man United are more likely to sign Joao Gomes In terms of alternative midfield targets, Man United have also been linked to Wolves’ Joao Gomes as a potential signing in January. Gomes has been a bright spark in a poor Wolves side so far this season, and if the Midlands-based club begin to accept relegation as their fate, they could cash in on the Brazilian in January. Romano provided an update on the potential Gomes to Old Trafford move over the Winter. He said: “Joao Gomes is one of the names under consideration at Manchester United. Joao Gomes is appreciated, he’s seen as an opportunity eventually if Wolves decide to let the player go in January. “Joao Gomes could be one to watch with the player very keen on a move to Manchester United. This depends on what happens with Wolves.” Gomes has made an appearance in every Premier League games for Wolves this season, and is expected to command a transfer fee of around £44m, if United were to make a move for him in January.
