Former Man United first-team coach Benni McCarthy has backed the Red Devils to sign Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo.
The 25-year-old is believed to have a release clause in his contract and United have been credited with an interest. Asked by BestBettingSites.co.uk for his thoughts on the player, McCarthy said:
“I was a big fan of his. I liked him very much after his first season at Bournemouth and I thought he would be a really good acquisition for Man United. He’s brave, he’s bold, he’s fearless and I think he’s the kind of character United need in the squad. People that take the game by the scruff of the neck and then just do it. Unfortunately, we didn’t make the move [at the time], and he certainly is probably the most in-form player in the Premier League at the moment. Adding goals too, being a leader in that Bournemouth squad. He’s a huge reason why they’re flying this season.”
“I think he would be a perfect fit for Man United, especially now that Amorim has drafted Bruno into midfield. You would have had Antoine Semenyo on the left, Matheus Cunha as your No. 10, Sesko as your No. 9, with Mbeumo on the right. Then Bruno, Casemiro, Kobbie, Ugarte are the midfield options. He would have been the ideal signing for Man United. But I think as things look, Liverpool might look to snatch him up.”
Who are the contenders for Semenyo’s signature?
As McCarthy mentions, Liverpool are thought to be among the Ghanaian international’s potential suitors, along with Tottenham.
While Semenyo only signed a new deal back in the summer, the inclusion of a buyout clause makes him a very attractive target, especially considering the form he has shown this season. In 9 appearances for Bournemouth, he has scored 6 goals and provided 3 assists.
How much would Man United have to pay?
The release fee is said to be above the £65m that Spurs paid for Dominic Solanke, and it was reported last summer that the Cherries would have accepted an offer in the region of £75m.
We can surmise that the Red Devils would probably need to spend between these two amounts, at the very least, to secure his services.
