Man United will consider reigniting their interest in Conor Gallagher during the January transfer window if Atletico Madrid make him available on loan, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.
Speaking on The United Stand YouTube channel, Jacobs said that the Red Devils failed in an attempt to snap up the former Chelsea player in the summer, but they could try again in the New Year if they were given some encouragement:
“Manchester United’s interest is genuine, and Gallagher may want to go somewhere and return to England and really boost his chances of getting in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.”
“We know they [Man Utd] made an enquiry last summer, but the thing about Gallagher is not the player, it’s Atletico Madrid… To get Gallagher, Athleti need to change their mind and give him something short-term, and if it was a loan, I expect Manchester United to be back in that conversation.”
Man United have prioritised a move for a midfielder
Ruben Amorim’s side are hoping to strengthen their options in the middle of the park when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.
The position was already identified as a weakness back in the summer but the club ultimately prioritised other areas.
It’s likely that the Red Devils’ difficult start to the season has led to the club’s recruitment team redoubling their efforts to find a new midfielder. Uncertainties surrounding the futures of Casemiro (whose contract expires next year) and Kobbie Mainoo are probably another contributory factor.
Gallagher is by no means the only target
Borussia Dortmund’s Jobe Bellingham, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, Sporting Lisbon’s Morten Hjulmand and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton are just some of the other names under consideration.
