Whether Joshua Zirkzee will continue at Manchester United beyond the winter transfer window remains to be seen.
Zirkzee has managed just 86 minutes of football out of the 720 United have played this season, a figure that reflects his growing frustration.
World Cup hopes
With this being a FIFA World Cup year, such limited game time does him no favours. He risks missing out on a place in the Netherlands squad.
Like any player with ambitions of representing his country at the grandest stage of international football next summer, Zirkzee is said to be increasingly frustrated by his lack of minutes. He is aching to prove he belongs on that plane to America.
But with United out of Europe and fixtures thinning, opportunities at Old Trafford are hard to come by. As a result, the summer 2024 signing is now being linked with a move away.
West Ham United, Everton, Como and AS Roma have all been credited with interest in his signature.
Truth of the exit links
As the transfer speculation intensifies, a winter departure to safeguard his World Cup dream seems increasingly likely. But Fabrizio Romano has offered a fresh, interesting update.
“Joshua Zirkzee wants to fight for his place at Manchester United. He is not happy about the current game time, but that doesn’t mean he is unhappy with United,” Romano said via his YouTube channel.
The European transfer guru then clarified the links to a West Ham switch:
“West Ham have shown some interest in Joshua Zirkzee, but it’s nothing as advanced as discussing a deal.”
If accurate, this revelation will ease concerns among United fans, but none more so than his United boss, Ruben Amorim.
The United head coach reportedly does not want Zirkzee to leave. He still sees him as a key component of his long-term project.
One of a kind
While he has not become the goalscoring monster many expected when United splashed £36.5 million, Zirkzee has still won fans over with his distinctive style.
He is a rare breed who blends the physical presence of a traditional number #9 with the technical flair and playmaking instincts of a number #10.
On his day, he makes things happen in the final third. His link-up play carves out chance after chance. That is why, for many, letting him go would be a big misstep.
He is the kind of player Amorim’s project should be built around.
