“Now it’s time to…”: Amorim issues rallying call to his United stars after crucial 2-1 win over Chelsea

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has revealed his only gripe after the big 2-1 victory against Chelsea.

United secure all three points vs. Chelsea

United began at Old Trafford perfectly as Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was shown a red card just four minutes in for a reckless challenge on Bryan Mbeumo.

Bruno Fernandes proceeded to give the hosts the lead 10 minutes later, as he directed a Patrick Dorgu delivery into the back of the net. Casemiro made it 2-0 before he was also sent off for a second bookable offence.

Trevoh Chalobah halved the deficit late on to stage a ferocious finish, but the Red Devils managed to hold on for all three points.

The result has propelled United to ninth place in the Premier League table, with seven points to their name from the opening five fixtures.

After the final whistle, Amorim spoke to the media and revealed that United overcomplicated things and made the game harder for themselves than it needed to be.

Amorim voices sole concern after Chelsea win

Amorim told Sky Sports [as quoted by BBC Sport], “We started the game really well, really aggressive. We were so aggressive in the second balls.”

“We had the sending off with Casemiro, we like to complicate our game always but it was a good day. I felt the urgency, of course the sending off helped us. We had to be more clinical to finish the game off sooner.”

Asked about Fernandes registering his 100th goal for United, he answered, “He has a great spirit, he is our captain and he scored a goal playing as a midfielder so I am really happy about that! People don’t have good things to say about our team so I am just joking around.”

“I have nothing to say to the critics and most of the time they are right. Today we won and it is a good day for us.”

On whether the win is his biggest home victory as United head coach, Amorim said, “It is really important because I understand the situation around this club. We cannot forget that we suffer a lot when we are on top.”

“We can lose against Grimsby, we can beat any team. I’m just thinking about the next one. It is really good to win. We need the urgency to win again, that is really important for us.”

He also spoke to BBC Sport and remarked, “Every win especially in this moment is important, against a great opponent.”

“We started the game in the right way. Really aggressive. The red card helped us dominate the game but we were already there.”

“We scored two goals and then we tried to complicate our game again. It’s always complicated with us. It should have been different this game.”

He added about Casemiro, “He’s [feeling] worse than me. We won so I will forget a little bit and he will suffer because he’s a top professional. He understands what he did. He is experienced enough that that play should not be played like that. He cares too much.”

“We suffered in the end but we deserved the win.”

“Our crowd, our fans are easy to please. If you give everything they will be there. That is something our players need to understand. To have the crowd with us we just need to run, to fight and tackle.”

“With this win we have to forget the good feeling of winning the game and get back to the urgency of feeling we need to win the next game.”

“Now it’s time to create a bit of momentum.”

United are back in action next Saturday when they face Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.
