United ruled out blockbuster return of former star to solve major issue for Amorim this summer – Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United will be hoping that they have finally addressed their goalkeeper issues this summer.

In the summer of 2023, the Red Devils opted to replace David De Gea with former Inter Milan custodian Andre Onana.

The Cameroonian was one of the finest in his position at that time, with proven ball-playing skills.

Onana was supposed to kickstart the ‘Eric ten Hag’ era at the Theatre of Dreams, but has endured an underwhelming time instead.

The 29 year old conceded 150 goals from 102 games for the Red Devils during his stay.

United signed Senne Lammens this summer

The goalkeeper position wasn’t considered a priority for United heading into this summer’s transfer window.

However, Altay Bayindir and Onana failed to convince at the start to the season, prompting the Red Devils to alter their stance in the final weeks.

The Premier League giants eventually secured the signature of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for the job on deadline day.

Onana, meanwhile, completed a loan move to Trabzonspor earlier this week.

United were linked with Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as well, although a move didn’t materialise.

Interestingly, De Gea was also touted as an option for his former club after an impressive season with Fiorentina.

De Gea spent 12 years at Old Trafford

After a one-year hiatus, De Gea moved to Fiorentina in the summer of 2024 and went on to register 11 clean sheets from 42 games across competitions last season.

It was previously reported that the Red Devils had discovered an option in the Spaniard’s contract that would have allowed a cut-price deal this summer.

However, acclaimed journalist Fabrizio Romano has played down those rumours in his recent newsletter for GIVEMESPORT.

When asked if the Red Devils considered De Gea’s return, he responded: “No, never. It was never an option.”

The 34 year old was handed a chance to say a proper goodbye to United fans at Old Trafford during a pre-season friendly last month.

De Gea spent 12 years at the Theatre of Dreams, arriving as a lanky teenager before transforming into a world-class star and the best shot stopper in world football.
