Former Manchester United player Antony has revealed how he was truly feeling about the club ahead of his departure before the transfer window deadline.
On Monday, Man United confirmed that Antony completed a permanent transfer to Real Betis, the club he spent time at on loan last season.
During the Brazilian’s time in Seville, he rediscovered the form that convinced United to sign him in the first place. This resurgence attracted the interest of multiple clubs, with Betis Sporting Director Manu Fajardo claiming that Antony has been the most difficult signing of his career to date.
Despite doubts being cast over the likelihood of the deal’s completion, it seems that it was in the best interest of the player, given his feelings on life in Manchester.
Antony’s difficulties at Carrington
Upon returning from his half-season loan at Betis, Antony was excluded by manager Ruben Amorim from United’s squad for the preseason tour of the US. He also began training separately at the Carrington training complex.
“Only my family knows how hard it was to be there,” Antony explained at his presentation at Real Betis following the confirmation of his signing, as per ESPN.
In fact, the player began to tear up, showing how much of an emotional toll life at United took near the end.
“Training separately. But I knew this incredible moment was coming. Of course, I was afraid it wouldn’t happen in the end, but I waited because I had so much faith.”
I can’t wait to wear the Betis shirt again. I can only thank everyone who made it possible,” Antony continued, before making a truly unfiltered comparison between his new club and United.
Antony unleashes his unfiltered opinion
“What a difference! Seville is more beautiful than Manchester,” Antony explained, slamming his previous club in a seemingly direct attack.
“I’m finally here. I spent more than 40 days in a hotel; it was very hard, but everyone knew I wanted to return to Betis.”
“Being cared about is very important to me; it is something money can’t buy,” the Brazilian continued, indicating the hostile feelings he experienced at United. “Here, I have had good feelings and felt lots of affection. It was always my first choice, and that’s why I waited until the last day to return to Betis. Now I’m here and happy in a city and at a club that I love.”
While United may have only fetched €25m for Antony, it appears that this was most likely the right choice.
After all, if the club is to rebuild and become more competitive this season, it will need to utilise players who are not only better suited to its playing style but who are openly thrilled to fight for the badge each matchday.
