United line up shock late swoop for PL captain sparking fierce transfer tug-of-war – report

Manchester United have reportedly joined the race for Brentford defender Nathan Collins, but they must first overcome a major obstacle to land him.

United still looking to reinforce other areas of their squad

Heading into the ongoing summer transfer window, bolstering the attacking department was United’s top priority.

The club achieved this, bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Brentford and RB Leipzig respectively.

Cunha and Mbeumo made their competitive debuts for United in the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday. The pair started and impressed despite the disappointing result. Sesko came off the bench in the second half.

United remain active in the market, prioritising additions in midfield and between the posts. However, defence is another area of the pitch they could strengthen, particularly if they sell well.

The Red Devils parted ways with Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof following the expiry of their contracts at the end of June. With Lisandro Martinez still recovering from an ACL injury sustained in June, Ruben Amorim will be wary of being left short of options in the backline.

According to Mike Keegan of the Daily Mail, United have set their sights on Brentford captain Nathan Collins as a potential signing before the transfer window comes to a halt.

United weighing up a move for Collins

Keegan reports that United have joined Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in the race to snap up Collins.

It’s understood that interest in Collins is increasing but there is a major transfer hurdle to overcome – Brentford do not want to sell him and don’t have to, especially after losing Christian Noorgard and Mbeumo earlier this summer.

Collins replaced Norgaard as Brentford’s skipper this month.

Keegan notes, “United are keen on adding another defender and have already raided the Bees for £65million Bryan Mbeumo. However, any further business at Old Trafford is only likely to arrive should existing squad members depart.”

Keith Andrews considers Collins a key part of his plans at the Gtech Community Stadium.

It remains to be seen whether United materialise their interest and seek to test Brentford’s resolve with an opening offer.
