Bundesliga superstar changes his mind regarding future amid strong interest from United – report

Manchester United’s pursuit of a midfielder has been a dealt a blow according to recent reports.

Midfielder hunt

United have spent big this summer, a combined £128.5 million on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

The news also broke yesterday that United had made a €75 million bid (£65.2 million) for Red Bull Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.

Despite this huge spending on attackers, Ruben Amorim is still keen to add an athletic midfielder and they have been linked to the likes of Valencia’s Javi Guerra and Sevilla’s Lucien Agoumé.

Historical interest in Leon Goretzka

Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka is another potential target.

It was reported that the doors could open for United to sign the German as Bayern urgently needed to sell players this window.

The Red Devils have pursued the midfielder since 2021 and have regularly been linked with a move for the German international ever since.

United an unlikely destination

Nonetheless, recent events at Bayern could well have put paid to any potential move to Old Trafford for the German.

Website CFBayerninsider.com has reported that “Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka is expected to stay at the Allianz Arena for the upcoming season following the departure of Joao Palhinha.”

It is also stated that “Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for Goretzka in recent transfer windows, and there were suggestions that he could be sold in the summer.”

At one point a departure last season seemed inevitable for Goretzka but “he fought back brilliantly and got his spot back in the starting lineup under Vincent Kompany. The perception around him has changed, and there’s no way he would be sold now after Palhinha’s exit to Tottenham.”

Therefore, after United finally sign a striker, they will have to spend the remaining weeks of the window trying to pull off a deal for midfielder that isn’t Goretzka.
