Mass exodus – five senior stars all put in transfer requests from Man United – The Athletic

Five Manchester United stars have informed the club that they want to leave.

According to several leading journalists including Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic, Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Alejandro Garnacho have all signalled their intention to find another club.

United have reportedly accepted the requests and have granted permission to each of the five players not to report for training until later in July while they attempt to find a new home.

Five feet already out of the door

This means none of the five will be on the pre-season tour of the United States.

There is no name on the list that comes as a shock, with four – Rashford, Antony, Malacia and Sancho – all already out on loan after a parting of the ways with United’s management.

Garnacho was also known to be unhappy after being left out of the starting XI of the Europa League final against Spurs in May.

It had been reported that head coach Roben Amorim had told the Argentinian to find himself another club after his comments, and those of his brother, on social media.

However, this official news from the club puts paid to any lingering hopes fans might have had of seeing a rapprochement between the talented youngster and Amorim, or indeed, of seeing another fan favourite, Rashford, in the famous Red shirt again.

#MUFC say Rashford, Antony, Garnacho, Sancho, Malacia have told club they wish to explore a future away. So their return date is being delayed until later in July.

Cunha will be given No 10 shirt. Rashford’s reps were informed in advance.

Five out, but how many in?

Normally when a Premier League club loses five senior players, one would expect five replacements to be signed, but that is unlikely to be the case at Old Trafford.

Malacia was arguably already replaced by Patrick Dorgu in January and Rashford by Matheus Cunha in June. Antony could be replaced by Bryan Mbeumo, who is close to sealing a move. Sancho is unlikely to warrant a like-for-like replacement although there has been much speculation of a swap deal, with Juventus’ Douglas Luiz coming the other way.

Meanwhile, Rashford’s hopes of realising his dream move to Barcelona were boosted this morning when the Blaugrana’s top target, Nico Williams, decided to sign a new deal at Athletic Club. Chelsea and Napoli appear interested in Garnacho but there has been little movement recently from either. Antony’s loan club, Real Betis, are still trying to structure an affordable deal to keep him, but as of yet there has been no reported interest in Malacia.
