Euro giants hold firm on position as United bide time over talks for Bellingham’s heir – David Ornstein

The Manchester United recruitment department were expected to dive into the transfer market this summer and return with some of the finest talent available.

Following a disappointing 2024–25 campaign, proper recruitment was one of the ways to get Ruben Amorim’s project off the ground.

Alongside several expected signings in attack, an athletic midfielder was thought to be high on Amorim’s summer wish list.

Notably, Bundesliga transfer insider Christian Falk recently revealed that United has an interest in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha.

Falk confirmed the interest but noted that the Premier League outfit would have to do a great deal of convincing for Dortmund even to consider selling their “Leon Goretzka 2.0.”

Ornstein provides clarity on United–Nmecha links

While Falk’s revelations suggested a tough negotiation might be ahead, David Ornstein has since issued a more sobering update.

Writing in The Athletic, Ornstein insists INEOS have yet to make contact with Nmecha’s camp.

More importantly, he also confirmed that Dortmund have no intention of entertaining any offers for the midfielder.

“As for midfield, despite links to Felix Nmecha, United are yet to make contact with the player’s representatives, and Borussia Dortmund have no intention of allowing the 24-year-old to leave this summer,” Ornstein reported.

It could be argued that the lack of movement stems from United’s current focus on striker negotiations and their pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo.

Still, had they been genuinely keen on signing the former Manchester City man, an initial enquiry would likely have already taken place.

No appetite for another saga

With Dortmund standing firm over the 24-year-old, who was once touted as Jude Bellingham’s heir, it may be wiser for United to shift their focus elsewhere.

Felix Nmecha is growing more and more into the role of Jude Bellingham’s successor. Top clubs in England are watching him and he also has a market there. But the player wants to stay in Dortmund for now, and Borussia Dortmund are not planning to sell him.

After all, the drawn-out Mbeumo chase has already tested supporters’ patience; another prolonged transfer saga is the last thing they need.

Alternative midfield options such as Fermin Lopez or Wilfred Ndidi could offer more straightforward deals, and both may represent better value.

Is midfield truly a pressing need?

With Kobbie Mainoo poised to reclaim his place, and with Bruno Fernandes, Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro (who’s staying put) all in the mix, it would take a truly tempting offer for United to loosen the purse strings on another midfield addition.
