Former Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley is reportedly set to be named the new head coach of Plymouth Argyle.
Cleverley has been without a job since last month, when he was sacked by Watford after guiding the club to a 14th-place finish in the Championship, 11 points off the play-offs for promotion to the Premier League and eight points clear of relegation.
He took over the reins at Vicarage Road on an initial interim basis in March 2024 before he was given the job permanently in April.
The ex-United man won 20 of the 59 matches he oversaw as Watford gaffer.
Plymouth have been on the hunt for a replacement for Miron Muslic, who left the club to join German second division side Schalke.
Muslic guided Plymouth to an impressive FA Cup run, reaching the fifth round after a stunning victory over Premier League champions Liverpool along the way.
Muslic was brought on to replace United legend Wayne Rooney, who was relieved of his duties in January.
According to The Guardian, Cleverley is “poised to be named” Plymouth’s head coach after he impressed in further talks this week.
Cleverley’s appointment could be confirmed in the next 48 hours.
The likes of Jack Wilshere, Des Buckingham and Stephen Robinson were all in the running for the hot seat at Home Park but Plymouth deemed Cleverley to be the best candidate for the job.
The Guardian note that the recruitment process was led by former player David Fox, who just became the side’s head of football operations and former Norwich sporting director Stuart Webber, who is working as a consultant.
Plymouth will be playing in League One next season, having been relegated from the Championship.
