“Lucky that we are not relegated”: United veteran offers strident opinion on Amorim and club’s miserable season

Manchester United claimed victory in their final Premier League of the season thanks to second-half strikes from Amad and Christian Eriksen.

The Dane, who played his last official game for the club, scored from a spot-kick which was won by the Ivorian, who stole the show in the second half.

The 33-year-old midfield maestro has obviously not featured as much as he would have liked under Ruben Amorim, starting only 10 times in all competitions mainly due to his ageing legs with the head coach wanting a more physically robust profile.

Christian Eriksen has watched his team crumble in the league from the sidelines and revealed to TNT Sports that the Red Devils were lucky to escape relegation this season, given their form.

Christian Eriksen feels United were lucky to escape relegation

There was a genuine fear at one stage but the three relegated teams were so bad that the 20-time English league champions escaped in the end, finishing 15th following their last-day victory.

“I think unfortunately there’s been a lot of lows this season with the games, and obviously the final was the missing piece. It’s football.

“For me now, I think people are lucky that we are where we are, not relegated with the team with the season we’ve had. Next season it has to be better, and I’m sure it will be. I’m looking forward to watching it from the sides.”

However, having seen his teammates adapt to the head coach’s methods over the course of the last six months and Amorim’s convictions, the Denmark international is sure results will improve next season.

“I think you’ve seen progress – of course, the results haven’t really shown that. 100% the results haven’t shown that.

“I think the football we came from [Erik] ten Hag to this is obviously going to take time to adapt, and obviously it’s been far below the standard of the club and the players here.

“I think the players individually are very, very good players, and they should never be where we are in the table. It’s up to them to turn around, but yeah, I’m confident they’ll be a very different team next season, I’m sure.”

Christian Eriksen lauded the fans

One thing that has taken the former Tottenham Hotspur man by surprise is the support from United fans, who have never stopped backing the team irrespective of their woeful form.

Amorim might have only won seven league games from a possible 27 since taking over in November, but the fans, especially away from home, have kept vociferously backing the team, something Eriksen cannot help but laud.

“There have been so many games this season where they could have caused a lot of chaos, where we’ve been disappointed with our football.

“But obviously, the fans, I think to our surprise, really have supported us. Obviously, at home has been, even in the stadium, there’s been games where it’s not been good enough, but they’ve really been supportive and away especially, they’ve been even more on their toes and even in the worst times.

“The club is happy to have those supporters who really support the players and the club, no matter what.”
