United set to raid Leicester City for one of the only shining lights in Van Nistelrooy’s side this season – report

Manchester United are keeping tabs on Leicester City goalkeeper Mads Hermansen as the club searches for a new shot stopper to provide “increased competition” to Andre Onana, according to a report.

The Red Devils have endured their worst season in the Premier League era with Ruben Amorim’s side finishing 15th in the Premier League table.

United have broken multiple (unwanted) records in terms of positions, points, losses, and goals scored while exiting every cup competition in defeat.

Reinforcements in the forward line – a new number ten and new number nine at a minimum – are essential this summer with the club set to direct the bulk of its £100 million transfer budget towards Matheus Cunha (Wolverhampton Wanders) and Liam Delap (Ipswich Town).

Further investment may also come in midfield or at wing-back while another versatile forward cannot be ruled out.

But it’s a testament to just how poor the team has been that the goalkeeping position is not also considered a priority by Old Trafford officials, despite Amorim wanting a new option in goal.

The form of Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir has been abysmal at times with both goalkeepers committing game-changing errors on an almost match-to-match basis.

Bayindir is expected to leave in search of more first-team opportunities while Onana is believed to be determined to stay and fight for his place, despite interest from the Saudi Pro League in the Cameroonian international.

Despite reports suggesting he could also leave, third-choice Tom Heaton is “expected to sign a new one-year contract,” according to James Ducker (The Telegraph). He further reveals United are interested in a new goalkeeper to provide “increased competition” to Onana should Bayindir depart.

The reporter writes, “Tom Heaton is expected to sign a new one-year contract to stay on as third choice goalkeeper but No 2 Altay Bayindir could depart as United look for increased competition for Andre Onana, although even the Cameroonian’s sale cannot be totally discounted. Saudi clubs are thought to be showing some interest in Onana.”

Leicester City number one Hermansen is stated as a number under consideration after Old Trafford scouts have watched the Dane this season, as relayed by The Peoples Person in January.

But Leicester’s relegation makes a potential move for the 24-year-old goalkeeper an even more attractive one this summer as he is likely to be available at a cheaper price as the Foxes prepare for life back in the Championship.
