Jason Wilcox pushing to sign 17-yo sensation, United have started talks to secure £41m transfer – report

Manchester United are working on signing River Plate star Franco Mastantuono, as per reports.

United’s technical director Jason Wilcox has become a hugely influential figure at Carrington, leading the club’s recruitment strategy following the departure of sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Wilcox played a key role in identifying Ruben Amorim as Erik ten Hag’s successor. The ex-Manchester City man is also driving United’s pursuit of Ipswich Town striker and former City youth player Liam Delap.

Now, a report suggests the 53-year-old is keen on bringing Mastantuono to United.

According to TBR Football, United have held talks with the Argentine prodigy’s representatives. It is understood that Wilcox would like United to try and sign him.

The 17-year-old is not expected to leave River Plate until 2025, but a deal is “likely to be agreed in advance.”

Accordingly, United have started working on securing his services.

Mastantuono is one of the most sought-after talents in South America, having earned plaudits for his technical prowess and vision with the ball at his feet. He has drawn comparisons to City midfielder Phil Foden.

The Argentina U20 international has been directly involved in 10 goals in just 17 appearances for River Plate across all competitions this season.

The attacking midfielder’s contract at Estadio Monumental includes a release clause of £41 million.

Considering his immense potential, the figure does not appear to be unrealistic. The more difficult obstacle for the Red Devils would be to convince the highly-rated talent to pick their project over other suitors.

It is believed that Premier League trio Liverpool, Chelsea, and City have also had conversations for Mastantuono. Further, Real Madrid are also keen on signing him.
