Pep Guardiola wants City to sign former United academy “revelation”, Amorim had tried to sign him in January – report

Ruben Amorim’s first instruction to INEOS after taking over as Manchester United boss was to sign a wingback and Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu was signed from Lecce.

But the Dane was not the only target on United’s radar with the club also mulling over triggering the buyback clause for Alvaro Carreras.

The Spaniard has been a “revelation” for Benfica this season, netting twice while registering five assists this season. His form has caught the attention of Spanish giants Barcelona as well.

However, the Red Devils chose to pursue the Serie A star instead and the former Carrington graduate has continued to impress in Lisbon.

City eyeing Alvaro

Now, as per Fichajes, Pep Guardiola is a fan of the 22-year-old and he has instructed Manchester City to try and sign the Spain U21 international in the summer.

“Manchester City has set to work to strengthen one of the areas that most concerns Pep Guardiola ahead of next season.

“The Catalan manager has requested the sporting directors bring in a pure left-back, with the intention of relocating Josko Gvardiol to the center of defense, his natural position.

“Spaniard Álvaro Carreras, who has had an outstanding season at Benfica, has earned a place among the coaching staff’s favorites.”

United should never have let him go

Ideally, the Benfica ace should have stayed at United given his immense talent but former manager Erik ten Hag was not convinced and opted to let him leave despite the problems at left-back.

It was yet another poor transfer decision in a long list of such debacles made under the Dutchman. And City could be the one to take advantage.

Dorgu can play on the right as well and INEOS could still target a left wingback in the summer should budget permit. That might make Carreras a viable target again.

Only time will tell where the Spaniard ends up plying his trade next season — at Old Trafford or for the noisy neighbours.
