Gary Neville names the player United let go who would be a “perfect fit” under Ruben Amorim – report

Manchester United’s recruitment over the last decade has left a lot to be desired and is undoubtably a major factor for the team’s struggles since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013.

Incomings and outgoings have both been questioned under multiple regimes at Old Trafford who are now further away than ever from the top of the Premier League.

Brighton striker Danny Welbeck is one of those that was allowed to leave the club under the guidance of Louis van Gaal whose Galactico approach in the transfer market ultimately failed during his time in Manchester.

As reported by The Express, former United captain Gary Neville believes losing Welbeck was a huge mistake and feels he would be a perfect fit under the new head coach Ruben Amorim.

Speaking on Sky Sports after Brighton’s win against Chelsea, Neville claimed the Englishman’s style suits Amorim’s system and says he would comfortably claim a place in United’s side, 10 years after his departure.

“He’s actually perfect for how Manchester United should play, threatening space in behind, playing off front players.

This idea that he’s not good enough for Manchester United is absolutely rubbish. He’s good enough to be in a pool of three or four strikers at Manchester United,” he said.

Neville added that Welbeck was “let go too quickly” due to Van Gaal’s style of play and says the 34-year-old “can still play at the very top level.”

Since leaving United, Welbeck struggled to really get going at Arsenal but has found his feet at Brighton and has arguably enjoyed the best spell of his career with The Seagulls.

His link-up play and eye for goal has impressed under multiple managers and his record against United for both Arsenal and Brighton is an impressive one.

The forward scored twice against his former employers for Arsenal and three times for Brighton, hammering home just what United have been missing since his departure.

United’s struggles in front of goal have been well documented with neither Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee showing they can be trusted to lead the line for Amorim’s side on a regular basis.

No doubt United’s head coach will be in the market for an upgrade to his striking options in the summer but it would certainly be a surprise to see Welbeck back at the club, despite Neville’s claims.
