“For sale again…”: Deeply unpopular INEOS transfer policy set to be repeated this summer – report

Manchester United remain reportedly reluctantly open to the departures of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo in the summer if suitable offers arrive for the youngsters.

Jamie Jackson (The Guardian) reveals the pair were available for “sale in the winter market” due to the financial situation at Old Trafford.

The Premier League’s profits and sustainability rules (PSR) are exerting acute pressure on United with the costly mistakes of the past finally catching up with the club.

There are few candidates within Ruben Amorim’s squad who would command a considerable fee on the transfer market due to  a combination of poor recruitment and the team’s dismal form over the past eighteen months.

As such, players like Garnacho and Mainoo, who have been rare bright spots for their club in this period, would represent an attractive option financially to generate significant funds.

The pair’s status as academy graduates means their potential sale would constitute a treasure trove from a PSR perspective as the fee received would amount to ‘pure profit’.

And it’s this reason why Old Trafford officials would reluctantly consider offers for both players this summer ahead of another “difficult” transfer window.

Jackson contends, “Manchester United face another difficult transfer window in the summer because of limited finances, with the ability to considerably strengthen Ruben Amorim’s squad dependent on accruing a profit from player sales.

“The number of players whose sale would draw a sizeable profit for the summer window is also limited. Rashford’s loan terms with Villa are thought to include a buy option for £40m. As a homegrown player, his fee would count as 100% profit under profit and sustainability rules, and funds would be saved by his lucrative contract being taken off the books three years before it ends in 2028.

“Alejandro Garnacho, valued at around £70m by United, and Kobbie Mainoo at £80m-plus are two other homegrown players who were for sale in the winter market and will be again in the summer. But selling one or both would mean having to find a replacement.”

There would be undoubted uproar amongst the Red Devil fanbase if the sale of either player was sanctioned, which INEOS will be aware of when planning the club’s transfer window this summer.

The immediate focus will be the continued shifting of United’s expensive older stars – Rashford, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Jadon Sancho (currently on loan at Chelsea) – before any deals for Garnacho or Mainoo are considered.
