Amad poised to make history for United tonight vs Southampton

Manchester United welcome last placed Southampton to Old Trafford tonight at 8pm UK time, searching for a first league win since the 15th of December.

The Red Devils have played the Saints on 134 occasions, coming out on top 69 times.

They have drawn 37 and lost 28 times.

United have already run out 3-0 winners in the first game of the season between the two sides at St Mary’s.

Here are three plotlines for fans to savour before the match.

United’s unbeaten run versus the Saints

The Red Devils have not lost in the last 16 matches they have played against the side from St. Mary’s.

The last time they tasted defeat was in January 2016 when Louis van Gaal’s side lost 0-1 at Old Trafford.

It hasn’t been all one-way traffic though, as United have only won eight of the fixtures and Southampton have drawn the rest.

In fact, three of the last five matches have ended all square with Man United drawing 1-1 at home in 2022 and 0-0 in 2023 against the side from the south coast.

The last victory for the Red Devils on home soil was the incredible 9-0 win over Southampton in February 2021.

United’s historically bad home form

Nonetheless, despite morale-boosting results at both Anfield and the Emirates in 2025, United desperately need a win.

Manchester United have lost five of their last seven Premier League matches, winning just once.

According to the BBC, “they have lost three successive Premier League fixtures at Old Trafford for the first time in 45 years.”

These were a 2-3 loss to Nottingham Forest, a 0-3 defeat to Bournemouth and a 0-2 result against Newcastle in an horrendous December.

The Red Devils could lose four top-flight games in a row at home for the first time since 1930.

Incredibly, the last time Old Trafford tasted a victory was in the 4-0 romp over Everton back on the 1st of December, a month and a half ago.

Amad Diallo could make history

In a season of despair, Amad Diallo has been one of the very few positives.

The Ivorian has transformed himself into one of the key players in the team and recently signed a new deal with the club until 2030.

He has been involved in nine goals in his last 12 Premier League starts for Manchester United, scoring three and assisting six.

If he were to score or assist in the match tonight, he would “become the first African player to reach double figures for goal involvements in a single campaign for the Red Devils.”

Alex Browne

Alex is a huge Manchester United fan, inspired by greats of his homeland such as George Best, Harry Gregg and Norman Whiteside. Proud owner of such niche shirts such as Kleberson, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Gary Neville. Grew up pretending to be Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the back garden, with little success.
