Official: Wayne Rooney sacked by Plymouth Argyle as his managerial career goes from bad to worse

Championship club Plymouth Argyle and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney have confirmed they have “mutually agreed” to part ways with immediate effect.

Appointed in May, Rooney leaves Plymouth after just seven months in charge with the club four points from safety.

The former striker’s last game at the helm was on Sunday, as his side were beaten 2-0 by Oxford.

The result saw Rooney and his players booed by their fans and it appears this was the final straw for the hierarchy.

Rooney oversaw just four league wins and suffered 13 defeats in 23 Championship games after taking charge of the Pilgrims.

A statement by Argyle notes that Assistant Head Coach Mike Phelan and first team coach Simon Ireland have also departed.

Rooney said, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, in particular Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip who I shared great relationships with.”

“Thanks also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and who make the club such a special place, the players and fans for their efforts and support during my time as Head Coach and I wish them all the best for the future.”

“To the Green Army thanks for making the games at Home Park so special, they are memories that we will share forever.”

He added, “I would also like to give a special mention to my coaching staff Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan and Mike Phelan for their knowledge, dedication, help and support.”

“Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to look out for and take interest in their results.”

Under Rooney’s management, Plymouth have sunk to the bottom of the table, tied for the fewest goals scored in the second tier, and have conceded more goals than any other team across England’s top four divisions.
