53-year-old manager viewed as ‘number one’ choice to replace Ten Hag at Man United, situation complicated: report

Gareth Southgate appears to be the top choice to replace Erik ten Hag.

Although Manchester United are desperate for a huge summer transfer window, the Red Devils have to sort out Erik ten Hag’s future first.

The Dutchman is still in limbo, while no real signings can be made until the future of the former Ajax man is set in stone.

Rumours continue to swirl, while no firm decision is expected on Ten Hag until next week. Several names have been linked with taking up the position if the current United boss is sacked – including Gareth Southgate.

Now, Manchester World believe the 53-year-old manager is viewed as the ‘number one’ choice to replace Ten Hag at United, though the situation is complicated due to his England duties.

United’s end of season review is still ongoing, with the club weighing up realistic options to replace Ten Hag, before they make a final decision on what to do with the Dutchman.

Southgate has a contract until the end of the year, while they’ll be absolutely zero movement on this front until after the European Championships. Again, all that does is further delay what is a huge transfer window for the Old Trafford club.

The England boss is apparently a boyhood United fan, and he is ‘admired’ by INEOS, while they also feel he’d be ‘perfect’ for the role.

Honestly, I’d be worried if this is the hire. Not only would United be hitting the reset button, they’d also be bringing in a manager who, in my opinion, is inferior to Ten Hag. It just doesn’t make any sense at all.

Let it sink in. Southgate hasn’t managed at club level in fifteen years. He was Middlesbrough boss at that time, while that spell didn’t exactly go according to plan.

Ask the majority of England fans about Southgate and they’ll all give you a similar answer about him, too. He’s viewed as an average manager. Nothing more. Nothing less. United should be setting their sights higher than that.
