Writing for TEAMtalk, journalist Dean Jones claimed the Wolves midfielder has said ‘yes’ in principle to joining the Red Devils in the New Year. However, any transfer still hinges on Ruben Amorim’s side finding an agreement with his club. Wolves are believed to be reluctant sellers. They are bottom of the Premier League table, and they don’t want to lose their best players in the midst of a relegation scrap. Gomes’s future has been addressed by his manager Speaking before Wolves’ 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday, new head coach Rob Edwards was asked about the Brazilian international’s mindset following speculation about a potential transfer. Edwards said that the player had been extremely professional: “We have got some good players and there will always be interest, but I’m not aware of anything. Joao has been excellent this week.” TEAMtalk believe that Gomes’s head has “been turned” by the interest from United, so it remains to be seen whether he will push harder for the move when the transfer window reopens. How much would Man Utd need to pay to prise him away? Reports in the Portuguese media last week suggested a fee in the region of €50m (£44m) would be needed to secure Gomes’s signature. Other sources have subsequently confirmed that an asking price between £40m and £50m has been set. Of course, Wolves may still block the player’s departure. If they have given certain assurances to their new manager, then they could prevent the sale from going ahead. Even if they do approve a deal, they may still want to sign a replacement first.
