It’s on. Manchester United are in the race to sign Cristiano Ronaldo against rivals City.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed in his press conference he is interested in re-signing his former teammate.
The Athletic are reporting United are holding talks for Ronaldo with Juventus.
Ronaldo is desperate to leave Juventus for a new challenge and looks likely to return to the Premier League, one way or another.
Here is a look at five reasons why it simply has to be with Manchester United…
A United icon
Ronaldo is a Manchester United hero after a spell with the club between 2003 and 2009, a stint which saw him win three league titles and the Champions League.
The prospect of him signing for City is an ugly one. It was hard to even think about.
Bringing him back to United just feels right. United have a responsibility to supporters not to let City get ahead.
Ronaldo will be welcomed in Manchester as a hero if he signs with United. If he goes to City, he will be hated, and ruin his legacy.
Upgrade on Martial
Let’s be quite honest here. Ronaldo is a better striker at the age of 36 than Anthony Martial.
Ronaldo is a different player now to the one he was when he left. He is more of an old-fashioned centre-forward.
Ronaldo scored 101 goals in 133 games for Juventus in three seasons.
That is an astounding record for any player, let alone one in his 30s. Martial has not reached that figure in six years at United.
Edinson Cavani seems like he is only half-in at United, and some of that isn’t his fault.
He is being pulled by Uruguay to play in their World Cup qualifiers despite Premier League clubs saying they won’t release the players for ‘red-list’ countries.
If he does go, then United are left glaringly short up front as he would miss numerous league and Champions League matches.
Sign Ronaldo, and United can afford to indulge Cavani and let him play for his country.
Bruno Fernandes could be key to Ronaldo signing, with Solskjaer telling his press conference that he had been in touch.
Fernandes will also help Ronaldo feel even more at home, thanks to their connection for Portugal.
The pair can strike up a stunning connection in the Premier League and in Europe.
Just prepare for a few light-hearted arguments on who will take penalties…
This side needs winners
Manchester United have come close to lifting silverware under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, just not close enough.
Ronaldo can bring a true winners mentality to Old Trafford, to add to his former Real Madrid teammate Raphael Varane.
This team is on the cusp of something special, and while there are quite clearly issues to be addressed in central midfield, bringing in Ronaldo makes United so much stronger.
