Roberto de Zerbi has emerged as a shock candidate to take up the manager’s job at Man United, if Erik ten Hag is shown the exit door.

Despite an FA Cup final victory, Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United future remains firmly up in the air. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are yet to make their mind up in regard to the Dutchman, though I understand it’s a tough choice to make.

The Red Devils played their best football in the match where they needed it most, beating Manchester City and lifting a trophy. However, the nine months prior to that match cannot be ignored. It was a topsy-turvy campaign.

Naturally, replacements are now starting to be identified. As things stand, there’s no real front runner. However, the Daily Mail believe a certain Italian is now a shock target for the Old Trafford club; Roberto de Zerbi.

According to their information, the 44-year-old manager has emerged as a ‘surprise’ candidate for the role, if the Reds do choose to sack Ten Hag.

United are said to have ‘sounded out’ De Zerbi’s intermediaries last week, after the Italian left his post as Brighton manager.

United will conduct a ‘thorough review’ this week, before making a final decision on Ten Hag, though De Zerbi is now among a list of potential options, including Thomas Frank, Thomas Tuchel, Kieran McKenna and Mauricio Pochettino.

The Red Devils cannot afford to hang around in regard to De Zerbi, though, with Chelsea also keen on appointing him manager after they chose to move on from Pochettino.

De Zerbi certainly falls in line with the style of football that United would prefer to play, though it will mean starting again in effect, with the Italian requiring a different style of squad to the one that Ten Hag is halfway through assembling. I would prefer not hitting the reset button again, but the Reds may not have that choice.

Do you think Roberto de Zerbi would be a good hire? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
