Diogo Dalot is feeling good about his chances of usurping Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the Man United right-back pecking order…
For the last couple of years, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has had free reign in that right-back slot over the last couple of years. Without little competition, The Spider has continued to improve and grow as a player.
However, he would pick up a poor red card on Tuesday against Young Boys, giving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer something to think about.
In the aftermath, the Manchester Evening News have ran a story on Diogo Dalot, detailing his chances of playing regularly for the Old Trafford club.
In the title, they go bold and state that the 22-year-old is ‘confident’ of leapfrogging his United teammate Wan-Bissaka – and earning the starting job this season.
Apparently, it all starts for him next midweek, with Dalot all-but assured of consecutive midweek starts against West Ham United and Villareal in two cup competitions.
It’s common knowledge United were looking at adding a right-back this summer, though Solskjaer felt more than comfortable of persisting with Dalot – who had an impressive campaign on loan with AC Milan last term.
With Wan-Bissaka not pushing on as many would have hoped, and the United hierarchy concerned after spending £50m on the fourth-best English right-back in football, that free run at a guaranteed spot in the team may be coming to an end.
For Dalot, this is undoubtedly the make or break season. He has to take this chance with both hands, with this latest Wan-Bissaka red card definitely keeping the door ajar for our Portuguese full-back.
These are two players with very different styles and personally, I’d keep both around and switch it up from game to game. It is definitely fair to say Solskjaer has become stuck in his ways with starting Wan-Bissaka almost mindlessly at times – and that has to change.
