20-year-old Man Utd target’s £87m buyout clause could actually be considered cheap based on latest valuation – opinion

Manchester United’s central defender hunt looks likely to be an expensive one, but one option’s release clause could actually be great value.

This coming summer, the centre-back position is likely to take priority with an ageing and injury-prone group of players currently in dire need of a revamp, leaving Sir Jim Ratcliffe with work to do.

One of the most popular options right now is Antonio Silva who has an expensive release clause that now doesn’t look so unreasonable.

Manchester United have been interested in Silva for a while now, and this summer looks the most likely time for a move to be made.

Silva wouldn’t be a cheap option for Erik ten Hag but he might be the best option, and now his latest market value has made his release clause look an absolute bargain.

Manchester United could find £87m Antonio Silva is a bargain

This summer needs to be a big one for the Old Trafford outfit with some serious gaps in the team. Centre-half however will likely be handed the lionshare of attention.

Silva at just 20, is among the best young defenders in the world right now, but Benfica have him locked into a massive £87m release clause which at first glance is off-putting.

But now CIES has shared his estimated transfer value which is £98m according to their model, which makes the £87m look on the cheap side.

This shows that while he is expensive, he could actually be worth every penny and then some as he’d solve the problem for United which has become huge this season.

Manchester United have Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans all on the wrong side of 30 with injuries becoming prevalent for the trio.

Victor Lindelof is 29 but regarded by many as not good enough to be starting for United, while Lisandro Martinez will be desperate to put his nightmare last 12 months packed with injury woes behind him.

Willy Kambwala is also there, a solid young defender but unlikely to reach the level United needs to win titles anytime soon. This leaves Sir Jim Ratcliffe likely needing to sign two centre-halves this summer.

On CIES’ list, Silva’s fellow Benfica young-gun and United-linked Joao Neves follows the defender as the second most valuable player in Portugal right now at £82m.

Silva would be an incredible signing and worth the massive fee

Considering how much Maguire cost United, signing Silva should be a no-brainer this summer. He’s a rolls-royce defender and a natural successor to Varane who could depart this summer.

We’d rather Silva be the expensive defender than signing for example Jarrad Branthwaite for a vastly inflated £75m when his market value is only £34m – a bad value for money signing.

So signing Silva and for example, the Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo for free, as HITC Football have reported United’s interest, would be a smart duo to significantly bolster the position.
