£110m Man United duo pictured back in training, could make first appearances of 2024

Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw have been pictured back in training at Manchester United with the defensive duo potentially making their returns for the Premier League giants against Newport in the FA Cup.

Whisper it, but the injury crisis which has derailed Manchester United’s season so far appears to be receding.

Lisandro Martinez made his long-awaited return against Tottenham Hotspur last time out, the Argentine marking his comeback with a nutmeg, a few typically piercing passes and an off-the-ball shoulder barge on perennial-irritant Richarlison.

Casemiro was also back in the United squad vs Spurs. And Erik ten Hag could soon have both Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw at his disposal too, the Red Devils facing fourth-tier Newport County in the FA Cup on Sunday after a two-week break.

Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw return

Man United confirmed, via their official website, that the England internationals are back in contention, Maguire and Shaw pictured being put through their paces alongside Antony, Kobbie Mainoo and Jonny Evans.

In fact, an injury list which would have once rivalled the Bayeux Tapestry in terms of lengthy now contains just four names; Victor Lindelof, Mason Mount, Anthony Martial and long-term absentee Tyrell Malacia.

Maguire has not featured since suffering an injury against Bayern Munich in early December, at a time when he was in excellent form, winning the November player of the month.

MORE UNITED STORIES

Shaw has been battling injuries all season, with his last game coming before Christmas against West Ham. Getting both players back would be a considerable boost.

United have defensive options

At last, Manchester United will soon be making a decision in defence, instead of simply just selecting whoever is available.

United have used 10 different centre-back combinations this season to date, and the lack of consistency has not helped the team at all.
