11 times Paul Pogba has made it very clear he doesn’t want to play for Man Utd

Paul Pogba has once again rocked Manchester United with more talk of leaving via his agent, Mino Raiola.

The explosion of speculation that occurred on Friday is nothing new for Pogba, though, as the duo have in fact previously caused as such on 10 prior occasions.

Following his return in 2016 for a world-record £89 million, the gifted midfielder has been constantly linked with a transfer away from Old Trafford.

Whether it be to Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain or back to Juventus, the 28-year-old has flirted with the idea of a new challenge for a number of years as the Red Devils scramble to bring back the glory days to the red part of the city.

As with most players, their agents do the majority of talking regarding transfers – but few more often and more publicly than the man who represents Pogba.

The two have consistently created drama and made back page headlines to the persistent annoyance of United’s hierarchy and managers in charge of the talented playmaker, which have been Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Pogba is in the final 12 months of his Man Utd contract With all that in mind, Mirror Football recounts the 11 times Pogba has made it very clear he does not want to play for Manchester United.

May 2018 Following the Red Devils’ poor form at the end of the 2017-18 season, in which they finished 2nd in the Premier League table, an exit for Pogba was well and truly on the cards, having notably been dropped for Scott McTominay in a Champions League clash with Sevilla.

Asked by French outlet Canal+ whether he would be staying put, he responded: “We are never sure of anything but contractually it’s sure, yes.

“I can never look far into the future. It also depends how it goes with the club, how things work out.”

Not exactly convincing.

August 2018 In August 2018, Mourinho surprisingly handed Pogba the captain’s armband for the Premier League opener at home to Leicester City after he had helped France to World Cup glory in Russia that summer.

He scored an early penalty and led United to a 2-1 win, while also making headlines following the full-time whistle, saying: “There are things and there are things I cannot say otherwise I will get fined.”

Pogba added: “I always give my best for the fans, for the team-mates and for the people that trust me. With the players that we have, of course we’re Manchester United, we have to look at the top of the league.

“That’s obvious. I mean, Manchester United, we have to show on the pitch, we have to play well, we have to be focused and we need people to trust us.”

This was around the time of a video showing the pair arguing on the training ground and many believed he was bound to leave in the January transfer window as his Portuguese manager looked down the barrel of his eventual sacking.

“There was a lot of talk, but it was just like that, I am under contract in Manchester,” Pogba stated.

“My future is currently in Manchester, I still have a contract, I am playing there at the moment, but who knows what will happen in the next few months.”

March 2019 Fast forward six months and Pogba was purring as interim boss Solskjaer had the Red Devils rocking.

During the March international break, however, the midfielder stirred the pot once again as he was quizzed about a potential switch to Real Madrid, then managed by Pogba’s childhood hero.

“Like I’ve always said, Real Madrid is a dream for anyone. It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world,” he stated. “There is also Zinedine Zidane as a coach and it’s a dream for anybody who likes football.

“For now, I’m at Manchester. We don’t know what the future holds. I’m at Manchester and I’m happy.”

June 2019 During Solskjaer’s first summer as permanent boss, Pogba took a promotional trip to the Far East as he visited China.

It was there when he prodded his possible suitors by hinting at a “new challenge.”

“There is a lot of thinking. I have been three years in Manchester and have been doing great – some good moments and some bad moments, like everybody, like everywhere else,” the star said.

“After this season and everything that happened, with my season being my best season … it could be a good time to have a new challenge somewhere else.”

January 2020 As we alluded to, Pogba’s feelings have often been communicated by Raiola, the cash-rich and loose-lipped agent, who also represents the likes of Erling Haaland and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

United tried to sign Haaland, who Solskjaer coached at native Norwegian outfit Molde, but his client chose Borussia Dortmund, and the Italian was scathing in his opinion of the Red Devils when asked whether he would take a player to Old Trafford.

“Today I would no longer bring anyone there. They would also ruin [Diego] Maradona, Pele and [Paolo] Maldini,” Raiola claimed.

“For Pogba I fought with [Sir Alex] Ferguson. Paul was the only one to say no to him, he never digested this and he took it out on me.

“But now Pogba’s problem is Manchester – it’s a club out of reality, without a sports project. Paul needs a team and a club, one like the first Juve.”

February 2020 Sticking with Raiola and, as usual, he did not mince his words when asked what the future could hold for Pogba, who was enduring an injury-hit 19-20 campaign.

“Pogba feels at home in Italy; Italy is like his second home or family, same feeling as Zlatan Ibrahimovic. That’s why Paul would like to come back to Juventus.

“But we’ll go to speak about that just after the Euro 2020. Pogba wants to play at the best levels always…but he can’t escape Manchester United now, in this moment where the club is not having a good period.”

Raiola has ensured Pogba’s name is never far from the headlines ( Image:

The question was ‘would he like Italy?’―what has that got to do with being Manchester United’s player. And saying that you are Manchester United’s player – are you owned by the club?

“I have been asked if he likes Italy, and I am answering as Mino Raiola; am I not allowed to do that?

“United fans should read the whole interview. He is only committed to Manchester United until after the European Championship. The only focus there is to get back as soon as possible into the team to help the team, and to make a good end of the season for Manchester United. That is what I said in Italy and that is what I am saying here.”

March 2020 New month, same story.

This time, the focus was on Real again as Raiola outlined his ‘good relationship’ with the Spanish giants, while Pogba recovered from injury at the beginning of the global pandemic.

“My relations with Real Madrid are very good. I want to take a great footballer there and I will try this summer. It would be a pride for me and my footballers because Real Madrid is a great club.

“I am in contact with [general director] Jose Angel Sanchez and I love discussing football and FIFA issues with him because his opinion interests me,” he revealed.

“I have great hope that one day he will be able to lead a great footballer to Real Madrid.

“Paul is going through a difficult time, but let it be clear because in England they are very sensitive, Pogba is focused on making a great end to the season with Manchester United.”

October 2020 The next entry is a prequel to arguably Raiola’s most talked-about comments.

The Red Devils had triggered a one-year extension in Pogba’s contract and the man himself was asked about negotiations while on international duty with France.

“No-one has told me anything. I have not spoken to Ed Woodward. We haven’t spoken about a new deal,” Pogba revealed.

“At the moment, I am in Manchester and I am concentrating about getting back to my best form. I think there will be a moment when the club will come and talk to me and maybe offer me something, or not.”

He claimed: “All football players would love to play for Real Madrid. It is a dream for me, why not one day?

“I am in Manchester and I love my club. I am playing in Manchester, I’m having fun and I want to do everything to put the club where it deserves.

“I will give everything to the max, like my team-mates.”

December 2020 Let us set the scene; Manchester United are on a flight to east Germany ahead of a pivotal Champions League group stage match against RB Leipzig.

Pogba had scored a pearler in the weekend win at West Ham, adding confidence to the hope that United would avoid defeat to qualify for the knockout stages.

Pogba is set to face West Ham again on Saturday Speaking to Tuttosport, Raiola had a chance to ensure all the talk was not simply about the match, telling the Italian outlet to send the fan base into meltdown: “I can say it’s over for Paul Pogba at Manchester United.

“There’s no use ignoring it. It’s better to speak honestly, look to the future and not waste time trying to blame people: Paul is unhappy at Manchester United, he can no longer express himself as he wants to or in the way that’s expected of him.”

He doubled down by saying: “He needs to change team, he needs a change of scene. He has a contract that expires in a year and a half’s time, in the summer of 2022, but I think the best solution would be for him to leave in the next transfer window.

“Otherwise the club from Old Trafford, with whom he has a good relationship, know very well that they risk losing him on a free transfer, considering that right now he does not want to extend his deal.

“If people don’t get that, they know very little about football. In any case, they’ll all blame me if Paul leaves next summer.”

Pogba started on the bench and his team lost 2-3 and would have to play in the Europa League last term (where Solskjaer and co made the final but were defeated).

September 2021 As life begins to feel somewhat normal again, Raiola was back in the media with a claim that there would be discussions with the Red Devils regarding a new deal but mentioned Juventus once more.

He told RAI Sport , via Sport Witness : “Pogba’s contract expires next year. We’ll talk with Manchester United and we’ll see.

“Of course, Turin stayed in his heart and he cares a lot about these things. The possibility of him coming back is there, but it also depends on Juve.”

Three years on from Pogba’s first hints, the only thing certain is that United still want him and Raiola will keep talking.
