10 points adrift of safety; Man United loanee loses 5-1, relegation looks inevitable now

Facundo Pellistri’s loan spell at Granada now looks destined to end in relegation from La Liga with the Manchester United owned winger going down 5-1 at Villarreal on Sunday.

If the Red Devils had hoped that, by farming out a number of fringe players, they could raise their market value ahead of a series of big-money summer sales, then Manchester United’s chances of flogging the likes of Donny van de Beek, Jadon Sancho and the aforementioned Uruguayan for sizeable sums are dissipating pretty quickly.

Van de Beek has offered very little in a Frankfurt shirt. Jadon Sancho is performing like a pale imitation of the man who took the Bundesliga apart during his stellar first spell at Borussia Dortmund.

And while Facundo Pellistri has had his moments at Granada – a goal and an assist on his debut against Barcelona – the winger’s speed and endeavour alone will not be enough to save a team who look doomed to relegation.

Manchester United loanee facing relegation

Pellistri played 82 minutes as Granada were hammered 5-1 by an underachieving Villarreal side at the Estadio de la Ceramica. A result which leaves Alexander Medina’s outfit 19th.

Ten points adrift of safety with only 12 games remaining.

Their position was worsened, meanwhile, by the fact that Cadiz, Celta Vigo, Rayo Vallecano, Real Mallorca and Sevilla – the five clubs immediately ahead of Granada in the La Liga table – all picked up points.

“(Villarreal) were very efficient in front of goal. After the first goal, we were not up to par with the match,” sighs Medina, the under-fire manager who played a key role in bringing his fellow Uruguayan Pellistri to Spain in January (AS).

“We feel very strongly that we can change the situation, the course, and try to achieve the objective (of survival).

“In this game, you get nothing. This is what happened after the first goal.”

Ten points adrift of safety

Pellistri’s agent indicated recently that the £9 million signing from Penarol could leave Manchester United permanently should Erik ten Hag – who barely handed him a start before Christmas – stay on at Old Trafford.

With the Dutchman’s future also in question following successive Premier League defeats – and amid reports linking Graham Potter with a move to Manchester – do not rule out Pellistri outlasting Ten Hag at the Red Devils.
