0 dribbles, 0 crosses, 1/6 ground duels won, 9 passes: United star plummeted to shocking new low in loss vs. West Ham

Manchester United suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of West Ham on Sunday afternoon.

Tomáš Souček gave the visitors the lead in the 26th minute, as he got on the end of a cross from Mohammed Kudus and got the better of Harry Amass to guide it into the back of Altay Bayindir’s net.

Jarrod Bowen doubled his side’s advantage just before the hour-mark, tapping home an Aaron Wan-Bissaka ball.

This latest disappointing result means that United have suffered 17 Premier League defeats this term.

According to OptaJoe, United have now suffered their ninth home defeat of the season, matching their worst-ever tally in a single league campaign. The only other times they’ve endured this many losses at Old Trafford were in 1930/31, 1933/34, and 1962/63.

The Red Devils carved out a few chances, with the most promising falling to Rasmus Hojlund but he failed to convert. Mason Mount teed up a golden opportunity, only for Hojlund’s tame shot to pose no real threat to Alphonse Areola.

Hojlund also managed to get on the end of crosses from Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen, but he failed to direct either header on target, squandering promising openings.

Arguably, the best chance of the match fell to Hojlund, but the Dane couldn’t capitalise from close range as he was denied by Areola.

It was another nightmare performance by Hojlund, who also found it extremely hard to hold up the ball.

During the time he was on the pitch, Hojlund fired six shots. Four of these were off target while two were on target, even though they didn’t really require Areola to swing into immediate action.

The 22-year-old failed to complete either of the two dribbles he embarked on and missed two big chances.

He attempted just 15 passes and found his teammate with nine of them (60% pass accuracy). He failed to connect with the one cross he aimed.

Hojlund was a liability defensively, winning just one of the six ground duels he delved into. He came out on top in just three of the eight aerial challenges he competed for.

The United No. 9 lost the ball 13 times.

(Stats obtained from Sofascore)

It was another shocking performance from Hojlund, whose continued selection in the Premier League remains puzzling. He’s lucky that United have no alternatives in the Europa League, as he should be nowhere near the starting XI.
